Musk Torpedoes Trump’s $500 Billion AI Plan: The Bromance Is About to Implode

Updated: Jan 29

The bromance is on borrowed time.
The bromance is on borrowed time.

In the latest episode of Billionaires Behaving Badly, Elon Musk has decided to publicly rain on Donald Trump’s parade—because, of course, he did. Trump, with all the pomp and circumstance of a reality show finale, unveiled his $500 billion AI infrastructure project, hilariously named “Stargate.” But mere hours after the press conference, Musk swooped in like a buzzkill with a Wi-Fi connection, pouring cold water on the whole thing.

The project, which Trump described as “the biggest, most beautiful AI initiative in history,” was pitched as a private-sector investment that would revolutionize America’s tech landscape while creating 100,000 jobs. For a brief moment, Trump’s dream of AI-powered greatness seemed within reach. Enter Elon Musk, stage left, armed with skepticism and a Twitter account (or, as he prefers to call it, X).

Musk’s Ego Strikes Again

Rather than supporting a plan that could arguably benefit the country—or at least keep their bro-ship alive—Musk decided to dismantle it in real time. Responding to announcements from OpenAI, Oracle, and others, Musk didn’t just express doubt; he flat-out called the whole thing a house of cards. “They don’t actually have the money,” Musk tweeted smugly, while probably sipping his morning Soylent. He even doubled down, saying, “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.”

This, of course, prompted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to clap back with a curt “wrong, as you surely know,” because even in the tech world, passive-aggressive subtweets are king.

Trump’s Revenge: When, Not If

Now, let’s be real—Trump isn’t going to take this lying down. The man built his brand on loyalty and grudges, often in that order. Musk’s public undermining of Stargate isn’t just a tech industry kerfuffle; it’s a direct assault on Trump’s carefully crafted image as the deal-maker-in-chief. You can practically hear the rage-tweet drafts being typed out in Mar-a-Lago.

The once-tight bromance between Musk and Trump, which blossomed during Trump’s presidential transition, has clearly hit a rocky patch. For Trump, Musk’s critique isn’t just a betrayal—it’s personal. And if there’s one thing Trump hates more than a “loser,” it’s someone making him look like one.

Popcorn, Please

What makes this so deliciously entertaining is Musk’s sheer hubris. This is the same man who bought Twitter (sorry, X) for $44 billion just to break it, the same guy who claims to be a champion of free speech while banning accounts that criticize him. Now, Musk is out here calling Trump’s grand plan financially shaky, as if his own business escapades aren’t riddled with questionable decisions and self-inflicted PR disasters.

Let’s not forget Musk’s pattern of contrarianism for the sake of attention. Whether it’s tanking Tesla’s stock with a single tweet or alienating half the planet with his political meddling, Musk seems incapable of sitting quietly while someone else hogs the spotlight—even if that someone is his billionaire buddy.

The Fallout Will Be Spectacular

Make no mistake: this is far from over. Trump thrives on public feuds, and Musk is clearly spoiling for one. The fallout could range from petty insults to outright economic sabotage (and knowing these two, probably both). For now, the world watches, popcorn in hand, as two egomaniacs teeter on the edge of a spectacular falling-out.

Will Trump slap Musk with one of his trademark nicknames? Will Musk respond with a series of cryptic memes? Whatever happens next, one thing is certain: this bromance was never built to last.
